Yesterday Adam and I took a little jaunt (and the metro for the first time) down to the Mercado de San Miguel. It's an indoor market with lots of vendor stalls -- kind of like DC's Eastern Market, except amid the fruit stalls and bakery counters, there are also several wine bars, oyster bars, and a sherry/vermouth bar (more to come on sherry and vermouth). So not only can you buy a baguette and some jamón bellota (more on this, too) to take home for dinner, but you can also sit at one of the crowded tables and have a nosh (and a glass of wine, obviously).
And now, some pretty pictures and a mini Spanish lesson...
Cerezas = cherries
Pata negra = black-footed ham legs
Más jamón = more ham
Carnicero = butcher
Arroz = rice
