First we headed to South Loop for a fantastic brunch at a place called Yolk near Grant Park. After an embarrasingly large amount of food served by a hilariously sassypants waitress, we stepped out into the sunshine and started walking through the park and towards the lake. Stopping along the way to take goofball photos, we walked along the stunningly blue water up towards Navy Pier.
This one of Mike took Mary about five tries.
Stefanie had the brill idea to walk into downtown and have cocktails at the Hancock Building’s Signature Lounge. At 96 stories above the streets, it was hands-down the best view in the city. And she wasn’t lying:
After cocktails we took the L back to our apartment to relax and get ready for dinner. At this point I presented the troops with their sashes for the evening — Emily had the idea to make sashes for everyone to wear, and she wanted a sort of pageant-theme where all the sashes started with “Miss.” So I came up with punny “Miss” titles, and she created the sashes for everyone. Yeah, it was seriously nerdy. (Like me!)
Mary was Miss Interpret, as she can speak several different languages; Molly was Miss Understanding, as she’s starting a social work master’s program in the fall; Emily was Miss Adventure, as she loves to travel and has a pretty strong sense of wanderlust; Mike was Miss Match, as he introduced me to Adam (and yes, he also got a “Miss” sash — he’s a good sport!); and Stefanie was (my favorite!) Miss Conception, as she works for a teen-pregnancy-prevention nonprofit. She was also a good sport, as she got asked (cocktail in hand) if she was pregnant several times during the evening! Lastly, my sash said Mrs. Leff, and I got the pageant tiara.
Mmm... Ceviche!
Oyster shooters with vodka! We three were the brave ones.
Emily planned a lovely dinner at Nacional 27, a Latin American restaurant where we quite literally feasted on ceviches, tacos, croquettes, oyster-vodka shooters, and passion fruit sangria. Dinner went faster than expected, so we stopped at a champagne bar called Pops For Champagne for a quick drink before our next activity — the late show at Second City!
Second City is the comedy club where anyone who is anyone in comedy got their start. Including almost the entire cast of SNL throughout the years. They do a sketch comedy show, and Adam was horrified to learn that we were considering skipping it because it was one more thing the gals had to shell out money for, so he bought the tickets for the group as a gift to the bachelorettes! Such a gentleman. The show was amazing and had us in stitches the whole night, especially when one of the comediennes asked for a prop from the audience, and Stefanie jumped out of her chair like a rocket in an intense effort to give her the Miss Conception sash. The cast member put the sash on, and then proceeded to do a sketch about a woman from… wait for it… SAUDI ARABIA. I couldn’t even make that up. And no, she hadn’t been tipped off as to the current location of the groom.
Wait, WHAT?! A sketch using our prop about a
woman from Saudi Arabia? Too weird!
All in all, a spectacular day! Next up: our last full day in Chicago, including a panty-filled brunch, Millenium Park, Taste of Chicago, and 4th of July fireworks with a side of deep-dish pizza.
